Snow Mold Control as an Olympic Sport

How many times have you found this to be true in life: it’s not only what you do on the day you need to perform that determines success, but also what you did to get there? Just think of any Olympic gold medalist. Would their accomplishments have been possible without the proper preparation? The answer is probably not. The same can be said of snow mold control. Few superintendents of the northern tier would underestimate the importance of their snow mold applications, but how many of them think that the preparation before that final spray is equally, if not more important? Proper fertilization (especially nitrogen form and timing of application), mowing practices, thatch management, use and placement of snow fencing/turf covers, late season ‘clean-up sprays’, snow removal, drainage and in the case of pink snow mold, pH management and balanced fertility levels all contribute to successful control of snow mold. So don’t forget about the preparation and that successful snow mold control is impacted by decisions you make long before the first snowflake falls.
